My name is Verónica Romero, I am the fourth generation of a family of viticulturists and the first to make wine.
I live in the village of Los Duques, in Requena. The vineyards are in Los Duques and Las Monjas (Venta del Moro), both belong to the province of Valencia, but they are very close to Castilla la Mancha, which explains that our climate is continental with Mediterranean influence.
My family has been farming for years. Currently, my father and I work 40 hectares of organic vineyards with ages between 12 and 90 years. On the farm, in addition to the vineyard, we have other crops such as almond trees and cereal.
I studied at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. I started with Agricultural Technical Engineering and continued doing a Bachelor of Oenology. The objective of my training was to acquire knowledge to work the lands of my family and later to elaborate and bottle wines with their grapes. After several generations selling the harvest to the cooperative, I am the first to make and market its own wine.
The varieties that my family has worked with have been Bobal and Macabeo. However, in 2017 I recovered a tempranillo vineyard and in 2018 I started working a tardana vineyard. Both plots would have ended up abandoned or uprooted, as happened with many in this area. Currently, I make wines with these four varieties.
The plots with which I elaborate are formed in goblet and dry land, with ages ranging from 40 to 90 years of age. Half of the work is done in the vineyard. The first variety is harvested at the end of August and the last one in mid-October. I always select the best grapes in the field, harvest them manually in boxes and transfer them to the winery where the production begins. Since I entered the world of natural wine, it was clear to me that I would make that style of wine. I usually do short macerations. I intervene as little as possible and let the wine express itself.
In 2021 my project finishes taking shape. Located in the village where I live, I begin the renovation of an old house with a cellar built in 1910. Being able to work in this space allows me to maintain a rural and comfortable lifestyle.
In the future I would like to be able to teach my field and winery work, understanding wine and the area from a gastronomic, cultural point of view and an opportunity for anyone.
